Why wishes for colleagues read differently
A colleague isn’t a close friend and isn’t your boss — the register sits in between: warm and genuine, but professional. Wish their family well, keep it a touch understated, and don’t assume a personal closeness the working relationship hasn’t earned.
In Hindi this is a formality choice, not just a word choice. Address a colleague with आप (aap), the respectful “you” — never तुम (tum), which reads as familiar and is fine for a sibling or close friend but lands as too casual at work. “आपको दिवाली की शुभकामनाएँ” (aapko Diwali ki shubhkamnayein) is the safe, warm-professional register; save तुम for people you’re close to.
For a boss or a senior, dial the deference up further (see Diwali wishes for your boss). For a brother or a friend, you can drop the formality entirely and get playful. Same festival, three different registers — matching it is the whole point.

Questions
- What should I write in a Diwali message to a colleague?
- Keep it warm but professional: wish them and their family light, prosperity, and rest. Copy any of the 12 messages above, or personalize a video wish with their name.
- Is “Happy Diwali” enough for coworkers?
- “Happy Diwali” is fine, but adding a line about their family or the year ahead makes it feel considered rather than forwarded — which is the whole point.
- Should I use आप or तुम for a colleague in Hindi?
- Use आप (aap), the respectful “you”. तुम (tum) reads as too familiar for the office — save it for close friends and siblings.
- Can I send the same Diwali wish to the whole team?
- A group message works, but a wish with each person’s name feels personal. A personalized video takes about a minute and reads as a gift, not a forward.
